warning signs

i think we all reach a place and time when we realize that everything in the past has flown by quite quickly. music is something tangible that can transport us back to a memory, or a feeling, or a time in our lives, and the songs that take us to those places serve as a soundtrack to all we've been and all we've done...

there is so much beauty in a song. the way the words melt into the music and how neither one would feel complete if forced to stand on their own. the way a beautiful song can crush a man's heart and restore it again, all in the span of a few minutes. the way musicians always seem to find a feeling that is so deep inside all of us and capture it with words that we've all felt but never been able to speak aloud. each day brings a new tune, a new verse, a new line to help us express both the heights of love and joy and the depths of fear and anguish that define us...

it never ceases to amaze me how our lives are so cyclical. our behaviors always come full circle and while they manifest themselves in different ways, our experiences always creep up on us when we think we've outrun them for the very last time. it's a part of who we are and that's something we can't change. the beauty of the thing is that eventually you gracefully stumble across people who are right there with you. and when you do it's all you can do to share with them, through your words or someone else's, your realization that you couldn't really ever figure it all out without them.

...warning signs...
warning sign
i missed the good part then i realized
i started looking and the bubble burst
i started looking for excuses.
come on in,
i've got to tell you what a state i'm in.
i've got to tell you in my loudest tones,
that i started looking for the warning signs.
